Ben Caunt 1814-1861 Prizefighter Champion of all England |
| Ben Caunt is buried outside the north
transept of the Church, close to the grave of two of his children who died in a
fire. The picture is a photograph taken in 1999 showing his grave in the
churchyard. Ben Caunt was born at Newstead but grew up in Hucknall. He first became noticed as a bare knuckle fighter in 1835 when he defeated a relative. He fought - and lost - against the English champion Bendigo William Thompson over 22 rounds in 1836, but two years later defeated him over 76 rounds. He defended his title against another great fighter, Brassey, in London in 1840. In 1845 he fought Bendigo again and lost his title - over 96 rounds.
